Hard Little Town
The sidewalk out here is still broken I see
Done in by the roots of some dead oak trees
Cut down by some loser with more money than sense
If it gets in your way, kill it and spare no expense
We stopped beside those trees during our last walk
He glanced up at us but he would not talk
He kept on raking those golden leaves in his yard
I bet his soft hands get blisters when they work that hard
Chorus
This is one hard little town
Run by small minds with big bank accounts
But all that money won't make you real
If the last card's a bad one when it's your deal
If you listen closely you might hear the sound
Of big trees falling in a hard little town
I came back here to take that walk alone
I retraced our steps but those trees are gone
Just like the girl who once said I loved her too much
She went to heaven, I went to the woods, things got tough
The newspaper said his children tripped and fell
Skinned knees means no more trees so what the hell
See daddy beat nature with the cash in his hand
I bet that made him feel like such a powerful man
Chorus
This is one hard little town
Run by small minds with big bank accounts
But all that money won't make you real
If the last card's a bad one when it's your deal
If you listen closely you might hear the sound
Of big trees falling in a hard little town
Bridge
All I wanted were the places I used to play
Some shade to shield me from all the heat
But rich men in suits took them all away
And left stumps, dirt and broken concrete
Now I sit in this cabin out in the woods
I'm sure he'd knock it down too if he could
But it's out of the way and pretty hard to find
And by the time they do I'll be across the state line
Chorus
This is one hard little town
Run by small minds with big bank accounts
But all that money won't make you real
If the last card's a bad one when it's your deal
If you listen closely you might hear the sound
Of big trees falling in a hard little town
